Highclere Castle — Real Downton Abbey
Chauffeur itinerary
Full day
Highclere Castle — Real Downton Abbey
The real Hampshire estate behind Downton Abbey — Victorian Gothic grandeur, parkland, and the castle's own Egyptian Exhibition.
Highlights
- Highclere Castle grounds
- Egyptian Exhibition
- Capability Brown-influenced parkland
- Downton Abbey filming history
A real family home, not just a film set
Highclere Castle is the private Hampshire seat of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, and has been since the 17th century — the Victorian Gothic Revival exterior seen in Downton Abbey is a genuinely lived-in estate, not a set built for television.
- Around 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours' drive from central London
- Highclere opens to the public on limited days through the year — we check current dates before confirming your booking
- Castle and exhibition tickets are booked separately via Highclere's own official website; we plan transport and timing around your confirmed entry
Itinerary
Stop 1 — Highclere Castle
The current castle was remodelled in the 1840s by Sir Charles Barry, the same architect behind the Houses of Parliament — the same honey-stone Gothic Revival silhouette recognisable from Downton Abbey.
- State rooms and the grand saloon used throughout the television series and films
- The library, dining room, and other interiors familiar from the show
- A working family estate, with opening days limited around the Carnarvon family's own use of the house
Stop 2 — The Egyptian Exhibition
A genuinely remarkable footnote in Egyptology sits in the castle's cellars: the 5th Earl of Carnarvon co-funded and co-discovered Tutankhamun's tomb with Howard Carter in 1922.
- Exhibition of replica artefacts and the family's own Egyptological history
- A different angle on the estate for guests less interested in the television connection
- Usually included within the same castle ticket — we confirm current inclusions before you travel
Stop 3 — Parkland & gardens
The grounds extend across landscaped parkland shaped in the 18th century in the style associated with Capability Brown, with formal gardens closer to the house.
- Open parkland walks and lake views when the grounds are open to visitors
- The Monk's Garden and secret garden areas, when included in the day's opening
- A quieter, slower pace than central London sightseeing
Planning notes
Highclere is privately owned and only opens to the public on specific days each year, with the Egyptian Exhibition sometimes running on a separate calendar — unlike Windsor or Stonehenge, this is not a year-round attraction.
- Check and book castle tickets directly with Highclere before confirming your tour date with us
- Share your preferred dates when you enquire and we will help you plan around the current opening calendar
- Often paired with a quieter Hampshire or Berkshire countryside route either side of your visit
Ideal for
- Downton Abbey fans wanting the real filming location, not just a drive-by
- History and architecture enthusiasts
- US and international visitors seeking authentic country-estate England
- Small groups who want a quieter alternative to central London sightseeing
